What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)?
DBT is a specialized therapy that focuses on changing problematic coping skills to more effective and useful ones. The goal is to achieve balance in all areas of ones life. Therapy focuses on finding balance through acceptance and change.
There are four main areas of DBT:
Mindfulness: Being present in the moment to better understand one's thoughts and feelings to gain control and balance.
Emotional Regulation: Being able to understand and put a name to emotions to decrease intensity and sensitivity to emotions.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Building and repairing relationships through boundary setting, balancing priorities and demands as well as building self respect.
Distress Tolerance: Being able to cope with stress and crisis to accept a situation as it is.
Diane M. (Zaragoza) Wesner, MA, LMHC has participated in both the comprehensive training on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in Chicago, IL as well as the intensive two week training in Northampton, MA.
